We’ve been working with these weapons for over a month now. The Martians wielded technology we had never seen, took the blasphemous shapes of things like nothing that has ever evolved on earth, and now it’s our job to figure out how their technology works. Each tripod was equipped with a weapon that could turn masonry into smoke. Churches that had stood for centuries were reduced to ash, without even rubble left afterwards. There was no warhead, no sound, so what kind of weapons were these? I have looked at one of the weapons we salvaged.  It looks like a ceramic rod with no hole for a projectile to come out of. Did the aliens make their guns out of mud? Were they really so powerful that dirt was a weapon in their talons?
